The Northern Territory Planning Commission is preparing the Palmerston Environs Subregional Land Use Plan, to shape the growth of Palmerston Environs into the future.

The Palmerston Environs Subregional Land Use Plan will support a strategy of maintaining a supply of serviced land for development and include consideration of transport and service infrastructure as well as land capability and environmental values.

Planning Commission member Mr Allan McGill said the Planning Commission has identified a need to prepare a subregional land use plan for this area to provide direction for future urban growth in the Greater Darwin Region.

“As part of this plan, consultation begins today with the release of a Discussion Paper that has been prepared to assist with the conversation, and the NTPC wants to hear from the community,” said Mr McGill. 

The areas surrounding Palmerston city are being referred to as the Palmerston Environs. This includes Greater 11 Mile, Greater Holtze, Virginia South-West, Archer and Mitchell West.

“The focus area identified as Greater Holtze has the potential to accommodate substantial future growth and protect significant natural areas of environmental value, particularly in the Kings Creek and Howard River catchments,” added Mr McGill.

“This stage of the project is an opportunity for you to have your say on the future of Palmerston Environs by learning more about the project, talking with planners, completing a survey, or making a submission to the Northern Territory Planning Commission.”

The closing date for submissions to the Planning Commission is Friday 25 June 2021.
