Residents of Jilkminggan will begin to return home this afternoon.

Commander Janelle Tonkin said, “We were lucky that the floodwaters didn’t encroach into houses and no there was no damage to any buildings or infrastructure.

“Water levels are continuing to recede and we can now safely transport people home by vehicle.

“A Boil Water Alert remains in place until test results are confirmed and are can be certain the water supply is not contaminated, which won’t be before tonight. In the meantime, we are providing bottled drinking water to residents of Jilkminggan.

“I’d to again thank everyone who has been involved with this evacuation for their exceptional efforts and support to the people of Jilkminggan.”

The community was evacuated on Thursday afternoon ahead or rapidly rising floodwaters. 211 people were evacuated to Mataranka, with 180 spending two nights in emergency shelters. The remainder of the evacuees sought accommodation with friends and family.
