Midwifery Group Practice relocates in Alice Springs

Department of Health

On 1 October the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) will open the doors to its new premises at the top of the Todd Mall in Alice Springs.

“MGP focuses on women-centred care and is proud of the 11 years spent helping women in Central Australia through pregnancy and childbirth. Now we are moving to the heart of the town, which is close to other agencies like Birthing and Beyond, and this will be a new era for MGP,” said Aleta Kennedy, MGP Clinical Nurse Manager.

“We have been looking for a new space that is warm and inviting for our clients and offers easy access, and plenty of parking.”

The MGP was established in 2009 as an extension of the Maternity Unit at Alice Springs Hospital to offer an alternative model of midwifery care, particularly for women living in remote communities.

The service has since helped deliver more than 2700 babies in Central Australia, with care commencing from 10 weeks gestation and continuing until six weeks after birth.

Midwives from the MGP, which is fully funded by the Northern Territory Government, work with obstetricians and health centre nurses to provide the best care possible to expectant mothers.

MGP continues to offer midwifery care in pregnancy, labour, birth and after birth. Midwives help expectant mothers with decisions about birthing and organise clinic or home visits as well as referrals to other services.

“Our professional and dedicated midwives deliver a nationally recognised maternity model of care across Central Australia, including in remote communities, and this care stretches throughout their pregnancy and birthing experience,” Ms Kennedy said

“Our midwives share the same vision and philosophy about birthing as their ‘family’ of clients and former clients and they work hard to empower the women in our region.

“There is now a practice in Tennant Creek and midwives there carry on the same traditions of continuity of care as practiced in Alice Springs.”

MGP is now on the ground floor, Eurilpa House, 25 Todd Street, Alice Springs. The practice is open from 8.00am until 4.00pm Monday to Friday. Please call 8951 7067 to make an appointment.
