It’s a wrap! Darwin Supercars Doubleheader draws to a close

Northern Territory Major Events Company

Australia’s first Supercars doubleheader wrapped up today, with last year’s BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown winner Scott McLaughlin taking out the CoreStaff Darwin SuperSprint Territory 2.0 trophy. His win followed Jamie Whincup taking home the 2020 BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown last weekend.

This year’s Supercars was unlike any other, and more than 11,000 people caught the action at Hidden Valley over the two weekends. A highlight for many was the chance to meet their Supercars heroes during an exclusive Pit Lane Walk today. Flags were flown, shirts signed and physically distant selfies snapped as eager fans traded jokes with their favourite drivers.

As well as the Supercars, the North Australian Motorsports Club took to the track with three categories combined - Improved Production NT, Commodore Cup NT and HQ Racing Australia. David Ling, Marian Bujnowski, Rodney Jessup and Craig Wright placed first in their categories. The Top End Drift Association also put on an impressive demo display.

Another highlight over the four days of racing was the attendance of Bluey and Bingo, everyone’s favourite Blue Heeler pups. Small fans were delighted to floss with the two sisters, who were enjoying their first time in the Territory.

The Supercars teams will now head to Queensland for the next round. The NT Major Events team will turn its attention to bringing motorsports to Alice Springs, with the Red CentreNATS scheduled to take place from 4-6 September. Tickets cost $30 for a three-day pass. Children aged 13 and under are free. Visit www.redcentrenats.com.au to find out more.

Quotes from NT Major Events CEO, Tim Watsford:

“It’s been an unusual year, especially for the events sector, so it was fantastic to see some normality return in the form of the annual Supercars spectacular. The event looked a little different, in line with our COVID Management Plan, and we thank fans for adhering to COVID safety protocols.

“Spectators enjoyed four days of world-class motorsport right here in the Territory. The sun was shining, the track looked great and Darwin was on display to hundreds of thousands of people through the event itself, and broadcast and social media channels. What a way to wrap up an incredible weekend of sport where Darwin was at the centre of the sporting world.”

Quotes from Supercars Chief Operating Officer, Shane Howard:

“We would like to thank the Northern Territory Government and Northern Territory Major Events Company for all of their support for this year’s Darwin double-header. The hospitality and care shown to everyone at Supercars during our stay has been world-class and we look forward to returning in 2021.”

Quotes from BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown winner, Jamie Whincup:

“I thought after [the] penalty we were done and dusted for the Triple Crown, but it was fantastic to have a great day and get a win for the team. We were having a good battle with Car #17 and we knew the race would come down to the pit stops. We didn’t want to hand them the win, and we wanted to attack as hard as we could and that’s exactly what we did.”

Quotes from CoreStaff Darwin SuperSprint winner, Scott McLaughlin:

“We’ve made an absolute jet out of this car; we’ve been working on it all week. Having back-to-back rounds has been good. I have worked hard on my starts - I’ve got a really nice procedure and I feel for the bite point now. When I first started I was pretty average and stalled it a lot, but I’ve worked on it and it’s a confidence thing. That last start was the best start of the weekend for me.”
