Newland Park Road Safety Centre set to open

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics

The popular Newland Park Road Safety Centre is set to re-open to Alice Springs families and the general public on Saturdays from 4 July to 26 September 2020.

Open between 10am-2pm, adults and children will be able to use the Centre’s miniature road system, providing young Territorians the opportunity to learn what it is like to ride on a road network with street signs and working traffic lights in a safe and engaging environment.

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Director of Transport Safety and Services, Simon Saunders, said Territorians – big and small – are encouraged to make use of the opportunity.

“Following great feedback from previous years, we’re making the Newland Park Road Safety Centre available for Alice Springs families on Saturdays,” said Mr Saunders.

“Cycling safety is really important. Cyclists are one of our most vulnerable road users. Five cyclists have died and over 150 have been seriously injured on Territory roads in the past 10 years, and it’s our commitment to reduce these statistics.

“When riding a bicycle, cyclists are required to abide by all the rules and regulations that govern the drivers of other vehicles and there also specific rules which apply to cyclist. The Newland Park Road Safety Centre is the perfect environment for our young cyclists to learn these rules.”

Complementing the Centre’s Saturday hours is a range of upgrades, including new shade cloths, road resurfacing and the installation of new traffic lights, totalling over $160,000.

The ever popular Newland Park Annnual family Fun Day is still scheduled to be held on 19 September 2020.

Schools throughout the Territory can access the road safety centres free of charge, where Community Engagement Officers provide important bike education to students, and schools are encouraged to participate in this fun program.
