New NT Registrar for Community Housing Appointed

Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development

The Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development has appointed Acting Deputy CEO, Ms Karen Walsh as Community Housing Registrar for the NT under the Community Housing Providers (National Uniform Law) 2013 (the Act), effective from 16 June 2020.

The Registrar for Community Housing is responsible for regulatory activities under the Act to ensure a well governed, managed and viable community housing sector that meets the needs of tenants, government and private investors.

Ms Karen Walsh joined the department in October 2019 and brings a wealth of experience to the role having previously held executive positions including CEO of Shelter NSW, General Manager at SGCH (formerly St George Community Housing) and Director roles at Housing NSW and the NSW Aboriginal Housing Office.

The appointment of Ms Walsh as Community Housing Registrar for the NT is timely as the department embarks on a consultation process with the sector and key stakeholders on its Draft Community Housing Growth Strategy to align with A Home for all Territorians: the Northern Territory Housing Strategy 2020 – 2025.

Quotes from Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development CEO Jim Bamber:

“This appointment and the development of a Draft Community Housing Growth Strategy will help to position the Territory towards the next phase of community housing growth and development.

“While the Northern Territory’s community housing sector is relatively small with four registered providers in the NT, developing the sector will improve supply, service and access to affordable community housing.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank George Timson the former Community Housing Registrar.”
