Stay out of pipes and drains and cool off in the Wave Pool

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Territorians are being urged to stay out of pipes and drains this wet season and hit the wave pool instead as part of a competition by the NT Government, Royal Life Saving Society NT and the Darwin Waterfront.

There are 12 chances to win tickets to the Darwin Waterfront Wave Pool for you and four mates.

The competition is part of the Stay Out of Pipes and Drains community campaign and aims to promote community awareness and help prevent drownings in storm water pipes and drains during the wet season.

Parents are urged to talk to their children about water safety, and ensure they cool off in our safe pools and water parks.

To enter the competition:

1.      Go to @WaterSafetyNT Facebook

2.      Share the pinned post to your Facebook profile including the hashtags #StayOutofPipesandDrains, #StaysafethisWET, #WaterSafetyNT

All correct entries go into a draw with a winner announced every weekday at 4pm until 17 December 2019.

Quotes from Shane McCorkell, Director, Governance and Sector Management, Sport and Active Recreation, Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture:

“The wet season is a high-risk time for drowning and it is critical that children know to stay out of pipes and drains.

“Pipes and drains transport the overflow of water through our streets, causing an inviting but potentially deadly watercourse. The campaign, which runs for the duration of the Wet Season in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society NT, is a stark reminder of just how life-threatening the torrents can be.

“We urge all families to be aware of the Stay Out of Pipes and Drains water safety message.”

Quotes from Executive Director of Royal Life Saving Society NT, Floss Roberts:

“There is no room for complacency when it comes to water safety. It only takes a split second for pipes and drains to become raging torrents in a deluge so now is a good time to remind your children of these dangers as well as the safe and secure places they can go to cool off.

“The message is serious and Royal Life Saving Society NT is calling on families and the community to keep our children safe. We want everyone to enjoy their Christmas break and school holidays and this means to Stay Out of Pipes and Drains.”
