Establishment of Fire Coordination Centre

Bushfires NT

Tuesday, 23 October 2019

A Fire Coordination Centre has been established at the Peter McAulay Centre in Berrimah, in response to the ongoing bushfires currently affecting communities and pastoral leases across the Northern Territory.

Large fire fronts are currently burning in the vicinity of Edith Farms, Mataranka and Litchfield Park areas. There is currently no direct threat to life or property however, it is an evolving situation and residents should follow local warnings and advice. Large areas of pastoral lands and National Parks have been impacted.

Emergency response crews comprised of Bushfires NT staff and volunteers, Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service, Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife assisted by community members are working tirelessly across the NT to prevent, contain and extinguish fires in challenging circumstances.

With dry conditions expected to continue across the top end and the central parts of the Northern Territory, unfavourable conditions are likely to impact efforts to contain fire movement towards the end of this week.

Members of the public are reminded to remain vigilant and to report any fires by calling triple-zero or by contacting their local emergency authorities. Residents are reminded of their responsibilities in preparing for bushfires including the formulation of a survival plan and maintaining firebreaks.

Firebreaks must:

  • must be a minimum of 4 metres wide
  • must be installed around the perimeter of your property
  • must be installed around your house or any other permanent structure, stationary engine or flammable materials
  • should not have any vegetation more than 50mm high and free from slashed or dead material
  • if your property is infested with Gamba grass, ensure that a 15 metre wide buffer free of gamba is also installed and maintained along property boundaries, driveways and structures to avoid its spread
