2019 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Finalists Announced

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Congratulations to 21 Territory artists who have been announced as finalists for the prestigious 2019 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award.

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture, Director of Arts NT, Angela Hill, said the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award and exhibition celebrates the significant contributions senior Territorians make to our community and recognises outstanding Territory artists.

“This Award is important for the profile of the arts sector as it encourages and recognises portrait artists and senior Territorians and draws Territory wide interest and participation,” Ms Hill said.

“This year’s subjects are a diverse mix, including a portrait of composer and director, Nora Lewis AM who received an Order of Australia in 2011 for her contribution to the performing arts in the Northern Territory by fellow Darwin artist Cedric Lawrence. Artists include previous award winners, a graphic designer, senior Territorians and an artist who first exhibited in Washington at the age of eight.”

The Award and Exhibition will be hosted by the Northern Territory Library in Parliament House with winners announced at the opening on Friday 8 November. The exhibition will then be on display for the general public from Saturday 9 November until Sunday 15 December 2019.

The public are encouraged to come and support the Territory’s only portrait art award and vote for the People’s Choice Award, (after the exhibition is open), either in person or online at dtsc.nt.gov.au/poast. The People’s Choice winner will be announced on Monday 16 December 2019 and they will take home $1,000.
