Funding to assist Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC) undertake vet services on outstations and homelands not serviced by regional councils is now a reality due to a $45,000 Animal Welfare Grant.
The Department of Primary Industry and Resources (DPIR) provide Animal Welfare Grants through the Animal Welfare fund.
DPIR’s Manager Animal Welfare, Paul Mitchener said the fund provided financial support to organisations to improve animal welfare, raised community awareness of responsibilities in regard to animal welfare and assisted in progressing animal management practices, particularly in remote communities.
“AMRRIC undertook significant work during Cyclone Trevor
earlier this year to locate and assist dogs in the line of the tropical
cyclone,” he said.
“They also currently undertake work with regional councils, shires, Aboriginal
corporations, and other stakeholders to enhance outcomes in dog management,
health and control in remote communities.
“These grants see organisations assisting our pets and native wildlife able to expand, or provide better services across the Territory.”
AMRRIC CEO, Dr Brooke Rankmore said they were delighted to be a successful grant recipient of the Animal Welfare Fund Grant Program.
“Due to many homelands and outstations falling outside of regional council jurisdictions, they often have limited or no access to support or resources for delivery of essential vet services to residents’ companion animals,” she said.
“AMRRIC are looking forward to working with our partner organisations through this funding to assist in development of sustainable animal management plans for the longer term.”
