Launch of the Katherine Youth Action Plan

Territory Families

Territory Families has released the Katherine Youth Action Plan to engage young people with positive activities, keep them off the street and improve their life outcomes.

The Katherine Youth Action Plan is designed for young people aged 10-25 who live, work, study and play in the Katherine Township and neighbouring Aboriginal communities Binjari, Rockhole and Kalano.

Territory Families Chief Executive Ken Davies said the plan had identified gaps in service delivery in the Katherine Region and will work towards improving services to ensure young people feel valued, involved and empowered to live positive and healthy lives.

“It is important to recognise and support young Territorians and through listening and consulting with them throughout the development of this plan and establishing what they want and need in their town, I am optimistic and interested to see what the future holds,” he said.

The creation of the Katherine Youth Action Plan was guided by Local Decision Making principles and developed by the Katherine Youth Interagency Group.

Significant consultation occurred with young people, businesses and community groups and the plan was endorsed by the Regional Coordination Committee.

The Katherine Youth Action Plan has five key focus areas and objectives including community and culture, sector and growth, health and wellbeing, learning and jobs and safety and support.

Youth action plans are being developed in all major regions in the Northern Territory. They are a key component in the implementation of the Regional Youth Services Framework established by the NT Government in April 2018 and the Safe: Thriving and Connected: Generational Change for Children and Families 2018-23 to reduce crime, improve accountability and keep young people out of youth detention.

The Katherine Youth Action Plan will be launched today at the school holiday ‘Dive In’ pool and movie day event at the Katherine Pool.

The Katherine Youth Action Plan is available online and can be found here.
