Earth Science Week 2019 runs from 13-19 October 2019 and Alice Springs Desert Park is joining forces with the Department of Primary Industry and Resources NT Geological Survey (NTGS) to shine a light on geoscience.
The objective of Earth Science Week is to remind people that
science surrounds them, and the theme of this year’s event is ‘Geoscience is
for everyone’.
The partnership between Alice Springs Desert Park and NTGS
will help build awareness of the geological significance of the Alice Springs
region.
On Saturday, 19 October, Alice Rock Stars will take place at
Alice Springs Desert Park from 11am until 3pm. Attendees will explore geology through
special presentations by Dr Verity Normington from NTGS and Superstar of STEM
and long-term Alice Springs geologist Gary Price. This free event will include
hands-on activities for all ages.
On Wednesday, 23 October, a similar event will take place
for school groups, with a slot for Junior High Schools at 9.30am and Primary
Schools at 11am. Each time is limited to 100 students. To find out more visit

Quotes from Estelle
Marshall, Product Development Coordinator, Alice Springs Desert Park:
“The Red Centre of Australia is a fascinating place
geologically. For example, did you know the rocks at Mount Gillen, which are
the highest landmark in Alice Springs, were once under the sea?
“Our Earth Science Week events will explain how this change
occurred over millions of years, and other fascinating facts about the rocks
that make up our landscape.
“We have some
inspiring presenters to do the explaining, with Dr Verity Normington setting a
fine example for would-be female geologists and Gary Price a familiar face in
the local mineral exploration scene.
“Come along
to explore the geology of the Desert Park and the Alice region with some
hands-on activities and demonstrations. We will make science fun!”
Quotes from Dr Verity Normington, Project
Geologist, NT Geological Survey:
“Earth
Science Week is an international celebration of everything from geology to
agriculture to soil and plant health. Our event will look at the geology of Alice
Springs and some of the processes that have gone into making such a beautiful
landscape.
“I look
forward to helping the people of Alice Springs learn about the rocks in their
backyard and introducing earth science to all the kids that come along.
Hopefully some decide a career in this field is for them.”
