Community Youth Diversion Program Grants 2020-2024

Territory Families

Territory Families has released $3.155 million this financial year to fund the reform and ongoing delivery of Community Youth Diversion programs for 10-17 year olds in the Northern Territory.

The Community Youth Diversion Program Grants are part of a $15.8 million commitment over five years to develop programs that make sure young people who do the wrong thing face the consequences of their behaviour and complete their police or court ordered youth diversion programs.

Prevention and diversion programs also work with young people to address the causes of their challenging behaviour.

Service providers in Darwin Region can apply through a competitive grants process. The Darwin Region grant round opens 7 October 2019 and closes on 8 November 2019.

Territory Families is using Local Decision Making processes in Alice Springs and other regions and communities to identify and establish local solutions to manage complexities in those regions. This process has already begun in multiple locations.

Kalano Community Association and Yugul Mangi Development Aboriginal Corporation have recently been identified through Local Decision Making processes as the ongoing youth diversion service providers in the Katherine Region and Ngukurr respectively.

Territory Families Chief Executive Ken Davies said youth diversion was an important tool to ensure young people face the impact of their offending, while changing their behaviour.

“The young people involved in these programs will be held accountable and made to right their wrongs and face the consequences of their actions.

“At the same time youth diversion programs aim to divert children and young people away from the youth justice system by intervening early and providing opportunities for these young people to repair the harm their offending may have caused.”

The Community Youth Diversion Grants application can be found at grantsnt.nt.gov.au

Further information on youth diversion and other youth justice programs can be found at youthjustice.nt.gov.au.

An information session will be held at the Charles Darwin University Waterfront campus between 2-3pm on Tuesday 15 October.
