October is National Safe Work Month

NT WorkSafe

Territory businesses and workers are encouraged to focus on and raise awareness of work health and safety during National Safe Work Month in October.

This year’s national theme is ‘Be a Safety Champion’, an encouragement that workers, employers and organisations, can all champion work health and safety at their workplace.

Acting Executive Director for NT WorkSafe Melissa Garde said employers and workers both have a responsibility for health and safety and the first step in doing this, is to take an active role in promoting a strong safety culture in the workplace.

“As we have seen so tragically this year, an instant is all it takes for someone to be seriously injured or killed in the workplace.”

“Organising an event can be as simple as having a morning tea and encouraging everyone to discuss incidents or near misses that have occurred at their workplace,” Ms Garde said.

“An incident or near miss can indicate a control measure is no longer working or there is a new hazard in the workplace.”

“Make sure there is consultation during the risk management process and when control measures are reviewed or developed, so everyone is clear on what needs to be done to avoid being injured,” she said.

NT WorkSafe is hosting a number of free safety seminars during October, available to all businesses and workers. Topics include:

  • Manage heat stress – presented by Dr Matt Brearley.
  • Bullying and harassment is everyone’s problem! – presented by Catie Kirke.
  • What you need to know about workers compensation in the NT – presented by Kerry Barnaart.
  • Driving in the Central Australian Outback (Alice Springs only) – presented by Jol Fleming.
