Darwin Pride Festival’s 34th Birthday

Territory Families

Today marks the beginning of the 34th Darwin Pride Festival, four days of celebrating the Northern Territory’s LGBTQIA+ communities.

On this day in 1985 a group of passionate Darwinites came together to create the very first Darwin Pride Festival to celebrate the Northern Territory’s rich diversity and provide opportunity to promote equality and respect for LGBTQIA+ Northern Territorians.

Territory Families Chief Executive Officer Ken Davies said that Darwin Pride Festival is an important event in our community calendar and is a great time for everyone to come together to celebrate and show support to LGBTQIA+ communities.

“Territory Families is a proud sponsor of Darwin Pride and as an Agency, we are committed to ensuring that equality and inclusivity is embedded in our workplace culture and in the services that we provide.”

In March 2018, the Northern Territory Government amended the NT Adoption of Children Act to enable de facto and same sex couples to have the legal right to adopt children in the Northern Territory.

This year also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous and sometimes violent demonstrations against police raids in New York City in 1969. These riots are credited as being a catalyst for the gay and transgender rights movement in the United States and across the globe and a galvanizing force for LGBT political activism.

Darwin Pride Festival events and activities will run from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 September 2019.
