National Child Protection Week

Territory Families

National Child Protection Week, which officially began on Sunday 1 September, will this year focus on the theme Children thrive when parents are supported.

National Child Protection Week, which runs through to Saturday 7 September, is a week dedicated to focusing on and putting children at the centre by supporting parents and families to raise happy, thriving children.

Chief Executive of Territory Families Ken Davies said that this week gives us all a chance to think about how we can help to better protect and support children in the Northern Territory.

“National Child Protection Week is a reminder that one of the most basic premises of our society is that children and young people have the right to be safe and protected from abuse and exploitation,” he said.

The theme of the week aligns with Territory Families guiding principles for children, which are:

  • Children and young people are entitled to live in a caring and nurturing environment, protected from harm and exploitation

  • Their contributions to the community should be recognised for their value and merit

  • Their views on all matters affecting them should be given serious consideration and taken into account and parents, families and communities have the primary role in safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of their children and young people and should be supported in carrying out this role.

NAPCAN, with the support of the Territory Families will be hosting the annual Darwin and Alice Springs events which include a morning tea, networking opportunities and a number of presentation.
