Cyber Security Awareness Program 2019

Department of Corporate and Information Services

Cyber security is essential for businesses connected to the internet and that transact online. There can be a significant cost to business if their data or payment process is compromised or IT systems are disrupted by cybercriminals. Cyber-crime relating to business email compromise is increasing the NT, with NT Police advising an average $70,000 loss per victim business.*

This awareness program enables local small businesses and not for profit organisations to hear from cyber experts on how to better protect their organisations from cyberattacks and cyberfraud.

Wayne Ronaldson, an ethical hacker, will explain how hackers attack defence suppliers and small businesses with case studies about physical and computer system compromises.  Ronaldson has presented at international cyber conferences Derybcon, Defcon2018 and RSA 2019 in the USA and will highlight how businesses can be vulnerable to cyber intrusion.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre will discuss the cyber threat landscape, why businesses are targeted and cyber protections; while the Defence Industry Security Program will detail program reforms to support businesses to become defence-ready.

The Centre for Defence Industry Capability will discuss cyber security requirements for the local defence supply chain.

The free Cyber Smart for Business briefings in Darwin and Alice Springs for small businesses and not-for-profit organisations will detail cyber smart practices to help prevent falling victim to cybercrime, particularly invoice based frauds or business email compromise.

Briefings specifically for the seniors community will also be provided as part of the program to ensure seniors are updated on cyber protection measures.

The Cyber Security Awareness Program is delivered in partnership with the Australian Cyber Security Centre, Australian Defence Industry Security Program, the Centre for Defence Industry Capability and the Australian Information Security Association.
