Top End Parks the perfect place to cool off this long weekend

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

The Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture is encouraging everyone to get out and about and enjoy our Top End parks and reserves this long weekend.

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture, Acting Executive Director of Parks, Wildlife and Heritage, Sarah Kerin, said the majority of popular swimming spots were still open and picture perfect.

“Despite a poor Wet Season and lower than average water levels, swimming and camping at Litchfield National Park and Butterfly Gorge remains open and perfect for cooling off this long weekend,” Ms Kerin said.

“Swimming at Berry Springs is still open and at just a 45 minute drive out of Darwin, it is hard to beat for an easy day trip. Swimming at the park closes towards the end of the Dry Season every year when water levels drop and bacteria levels rise, however it is still open and a fantastic spot for a swim and then a picnic in the shade of the monsoon forest.

“The Katherine region has plenty of options for swimming, camping and hiking at Bitter Springs and Mataranka Thermal Pool in Elsey National Park, Nitmiluk National Park and Umbrawarra Gorge, and guided walking tours operated by Nitmiluk Tours at Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park.

“With mild day time temperatures and cooler evenings, now is the perfect time to roll out a swag and sleep under the stars at one of our amazing parks.

“Crocodiles live in waterways across the Top End and it is important to Be Crocwise at all times and ensure you camp at least 50 metres from the water’s edge.”

Territorians love getting outdoors and making the most of our natural environment. Occasionally parks can close at short notice. Just make sure to always check the website for up-to-date information before heading out to avoid disappointment: https://nt.gov.au/leisure/parks-reserves
