9 May 2023
Over 140 primary school students from 14 schools will come together today at the annual Meaningful Maths Enrichment Day. Students will participate in the event held at Dripstone Middle School, where they’ll collaborate through a series of hands-on activities.
Meaningful Maths is a math program that work towards students reaching learning goals aligned with the Australian Curriculum across the primary years’ levels. The approach was first implemented in three Northern Territory primary schools in 2009 and has grown to over 20 schools in 2023.
Athena Hammond, Meaningful Maths Network Coach with the Department of Education said the opportunity for students to work collaboratively with peers from across Darwin to master a range of challenges is invaluable.
“Allowing our high-level mathematical students to collaborate with their peers encourages them to become confident and collaborative lifelong learners,” she said.
“The students will be challenged to solve a variety of hands-on activities ranging from coding with robotics, building structures, solving mathematical riddles and investigating problems.
“Coming together is a wonderful way to acknowledge and celebrate our students and what they’ve achieved through Meaningful Maths.”
Meaningful Maths strives to engage students in the Australian Curriculum through fun and engaging activities that improves their numeracy capabilities.
Ludmilla Primary School experienced a significant lift in year 3 and 5 NAPLAN numeracy results in 2022 after re-engaging in the program in 2021.
