The Country Liberals Government is on a mission to stimulate housing supply in the Territory and another development is one step closer.
The Sports House site has been rezoned to MR (Medium Density Residential) as it is within close proximity to public open space, commercial development and public transport options. This rezoning will facilitate the development of the site for residential purposes.
The Sports House site will soon be released through a publically competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process and developers will be encouraged to put forward their vision for the site.
Government is aware of concerns raised by residents and community members during the rezoning process. The majority of concerns raised can be accommodated through best practice urban design principles which will be included as design objectives in the RFP documentation.
The development of the site will provide a mix of housing options to accommodate the changing needs of the housing market.
Acting Minister for Lands, Planning and the Environment, John Elferink, said this development will provide much needed housing to put downward pressure on the cost of living.
“The former Labor Government was asleep at the wheel when it came to land release and stimulating housing supply, leaving Territorians to pay the price,” Mr Elferink said.
“This Government is determined to tackle this problem with a three pronged attack through the release of greenfield sites, urban infill sites like Sports House and the direct sale of Crown Land.
“Affordability of housing is the number one issue facing many Territorians and the most effective way we can ease that pressure is by releasing residential land for development quickly, while also having a strategic plan for future development.
“The Northern Territory Planning Commission recently released their Towards a Darwin Regional Land Use Plan document for comment. I encourage everyone to put forward their opinion and play a role in the Territory’s planning future.”
Potential developers of the Sports House site should keep an eye on the Department of Lands Planning and the Environment website (http://www.dlp.nt.gov.au) for a notice for RFP.
