Department of Education Nurturing creativity in Territory classrooms

21 September 2023

The Territory’s young and upcoming artists, dancers and musicians will be getting in touch with their creative side as they participate in this year’s Artists in Schools Grant Program.

Thirteen schools from across the Northern Territory (NT) will benefit from $90,000 in grants to engage artists to co-design and deliver a creative project with students, teachers and the school community to provide innovative learning opportunities.

The Department of Education’s Chief Executive Karen Weston said these opportunities will allow our schools to experience the creative process and learn the skills and practices that local artists use in their profession.

“We are thrilled to launch the Artists in Schools Grant Program again, as it fosters creativity and innovation in our Territory classrooms. This initiative provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with the arts, igniting their imaginations and nurturing their talents,” Ms Weston said.

The annual program enriches school art programs and encourages school partnerships within the wider community and practical involvement with visual and performing arts.

Schools in the NT will be working with dancers to learn about international dance styles, partner with professional orchestra musicians, engage with Aboriginal artists about traditional art forms and contemporary printmaking, acquire circus skills to build confidence and resilience, use digital media and artificial intelligence to create emojis and design street wear and be taught watercolour painting techniques to study the natural world.

In the Territory, there is many talented and creative students, and programs like these create fantastic opportunities for schools to further celebrate and foster their talent.

“All art forms have the power to transcend languages and boundaries, inspire, and shape the future. This program reaffirms our commitment to holistic education, where every child has access to a well-rounded curriculum,” Ms Weston said.

The Artists in Schools Grant Program is a partnership between the Department of Education and the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities, facilitated through Arts NT.
