Department of Education Have your say on the future of preschool in the NT

Families are encouraged to have their say on the delivery of preschool in the Northern Territory. As part of a review into preschool funding and delivery being undertaken by Nous Group and Victoria University, the Department of Education has released a discussion paper for community feedback.

The review aims to identify optimal models for preschool funding and delivery in the NT to best achieve outcomes for children and families, in the broader context early childhood.

To date, over 20 early childhood sites have been consulted to understand strengths and challenges of the current preschool system.

In addition to targeted, on-the-ground engagement, a public discussion paper and associated survey has been launched today on the NT Have Your Say [https://haveyoursay.nt.gov.au/preschool-review] website.

Department of Education, Chief Executive, Karen Weston said the voice of stakeholders, including parents, carers, early childhood educators and staff will be a key input to the review.

“We want to hear from our community on their vision for preschool in the Territory,” she said.

“The insights from this stage of consultation will help inform recommendations which are expected by the end of June 2023.

“Through participation in quality early learning services and programs, children have a strong sense of identity and wellbeing and become confident and involved learners ready to transition to school.

“We want to design and implement a contemporary early childhood system so families can access quality early learning in the years before school.”

The review will drive reform in how preschool is delivered and aim to extend access to quality learning so all children are able to access two years of quality early learning.

Discussion paper submissions will be consolidated with insights from site visits to inform recommendations in the review’s final report. These recommendations will be considered by government, alongside a proposed reform implementation plan later this year.
