Beloved Beanie Festival Returns this Weekend for its 29th Celebration
The Alice Springs Beanie Festival is set to return to the Red Centre this weekend, offering an exciting four-day program of immersive experiences, unique stalls, and engaging workshops at the Araluen Arts Centre, from 20–23 June 2025.
Now in its 29th year, this beloved event celebrates the humble beanie with an astonishing display of over 7,000 handmade creations. These lovingly crafted pieces arrive from around the world, including countless unique works by Indigenous artists from remote Central Australian communities such as Santa Teresa, Titjikala, Ali Curung, Ampilatwatja, Fregon, Yuelamu, and Yuendumu.
Visitors can experience the "thrill of the chase" as they explore thousands of beanies bursting with personality, textures, and vibrant colour. This year’s International Beanie Competition, themed ‘Sporting Headgear,’ has inspired incredible pieces honouring Australian sporting legends like Cathy Freeman and Phar Lap, alongside imaginative designs celebrating activities such as hot air ballooning, hiking, biking, and tennis, all celebrating Australia’s favourite pastime.
The festival program offers something for everyone with a range of hands-on textile workshops, a dedicated children’s corner, drumming workshops, live music and homemade food served throughout the weekend. Best of all, entry to this family-friendly event is free.
Proudly supported by the Northern Territory Government through the NT Major Events Funding Program, the Alice Springs Beanie Festival is a one-of-a-kind celebration of art, community, and cozy creativity in the heart of Australia.

“The Alice Springs Beanie Festival truly embodies the spirit of the Northern Territory. What began as a simple idea in 1997 has blossomed into a vibrant, unique celebration of culture, art, and storytelling. It beautifully connects artists from remote Aboriginal communities with visitors from across the country, fostering cultural exchange and the sharing of skills right in the heart of Central Australia.
“We are incredibly proud to support this iconic event, which not only showcases the community's immense creativity but also plays a vital role in drawing visitors to experience the magic of the Red Centre."
Quotes from Chief Beaniologist Jo Nixon:
