50th Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta to take to the seas in epic battle
Thousands are expected to flock to Mindil beach to be a part of the iconic Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta which is celebrating 50 years in 2024.
Boats made out of thousands of cans – and the teams trying to sail them - will bring spectators entertainment unlike anything else when they battle it out for glory this Sunday, 18 August.
Established in 1974, the regatta sees a packed beach of people watch teams compete in various events including the best boat design and the fastest boat, before the Battle for Mindil takes place at the end of the day.
Boats can be made out of cans, plastic bottles and milk cartons, and there is a special category for children. This year a team has made their way from WA’s Wheatbelt with an 8500-can boat to compete in the competition.
On the beach, revellers can participate in a range of activities including a tug-of-war, thong throwing, beach relay, and a children’s sandcastle competition. Budding fashion designers can take part in a fashion design competition where entrants will show off their outfits made out of cans or cartons.
The annual event, which is supported by Northern Territory Government through Northern Territory Major Events Company, raises funds for various Territory charities and not-for-profit organisations. This year it will support Legacy NT.
Entry to the regatta is $5 a person or $20 for a family. The event will run from 10am to 5pm. To find out more head to [http://www.beercanregatta.org.au]
