Territory Day to sparkle as fireworks illuminate celebrations
Dazzling firework displays will shine bright across the Northern Territory on 1 July when Territorians gather to celebrate what makes the NT great.
July 1, Territory Day, recognises the day the NT gained power from the Commonwealth Government to self-govern in 1978. Every year on 1 July, Territorians come together to celebrate with free public events held right across the NT.
The theme of this year’s Territory Day is ‘It’s a Territory thing’ and recognises the connection people have with the NT and unique things that you can only do here.
Free celebrations including firework displays will take place at 17 regional and remote locations from Nhulunbuy to Alyangula and Wurrumiyanga to Yuendumu with signature events in Darwin and Alice Springs.
Darwin celebrations at Mindil Beach will include performances by ARIA Award winning artist Budjerah and folk-roots singer/songwriter Steph Strings, Bobbly Fleet Orchestra and The Melophobics. Festivities will begin at 4pm with fireworks at 8.15pm.
People attending Mindil Beach celebrations are encouraged to bring a picnic and settle in for the night or make use of the food trucks. It is BYO alcohol, but no glass. A free bus service will operate to and from Mindil Beach. Personal fireworks are not allowed in the Mindil Beach exclusion zone.
Alice Springs festivities will now take place at ANZAC Oval, it will be the last event held there before construction begins on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery of Australia. The location will provide a bigger space for patrons to view the fireworks and enjoy festivities. Territory Day celebrations were last held at ANZAC Oval in 2021.
Alice Springs entertainment will include Katanga Junior and James Range Band, who played support for Paul Kelly at the Warm-Up last year. The event is alcohol free and will run from 5pm to 8.15pm with fireworks to take place at 7.30pm. Food trucks will be onsite, or patrons can pack a picnic.
