National Child Protection Week celebrates 30 years

Territory Families

Today marks the start of National Child Protection Week, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2020 with the theme Putting children first.

Running through to 12 September this year, National Child Protection Week is dedicated to raising awareness of child abuse, neglect and exploitation prevention across Australia.

To celebrate the event’s 30-year milestone and educate Territorians about prioritising the wellbeing of children, Tick Everett from anti-bullying charity Dolly’s Dream will be presenting at the Darwin event to be held at CDU on Monday 7 September, and discussing cyberbullying and ways to turn it into acts of kindness.

Territory Families Chief Executive Officer Ken Davies PSM said National Child Protection Week gave us all a chance to think about how we could contribute to protecting and supporting children in the Northern Territory.

“National Child Protection Week is a reminder that one of the most basic premises of our society is that children and young people have the right to be safe and protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation,” Mr Davies said.

“Child protection is a whole-of-community issue and we all need to play our part to ensure children and young people in the Northern Territory are kept safe.”

NAPCAN, with the support of the Territory Families, will be hosting the annual Darwin and Alice Springs events which will include a number of presentations from Dr Nat Kendall Taylor and Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group.

More information about National Child Protection Week and its associated events can be found at the NAPCAN website.
