August marks the start of NT Seniors Month, which is dedicated to celebrating and acknowledging the continuing contribution older Territorians make to our community.
There are more than 50 events and activities on offer across the Territory this Seniors Month, encouraging older people to have a healthy lifestyle, get involved in new activities, connect to the community and have adventures.
Territory Families provided close to $65,000 in funding for this year’s events which include everything from Yogalaties, arts and crafts and line dancing, to social bingo, scenic flights and power lifting.
Activities will be held in Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area, as well as Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Nhulunbuy and Jabiru.
Territory Families Chief Executive Ken Davies said Senior Territorians are valued and respected members of our community.
“Seniors are an integral part of our social fabric in the Northern Territory,” he said.
“They have a wealth of knowledge and experience for us to learn from and we need to ensure that we continue to recognise their importance in our community.
“Seniors Month supports community based organisations to stage events across the Territory during August, celebrating our seniors and acknowledging the many valuable contributions they continue to make to the Territory.
“Events are being held in urban and regional centres so that we can celebrate our seniors Territory wide.”
The Council of the Ageing Northern Territory (COTA NT) has produced this year’s Senior’s Month activities calendar on behalf of Territory Families, providing a guide to events and activities on offer.
COTA NT Chief Executive Office Sue Shearer said Seniors Month and the grants provided by Territory Families allow organisations to showcase their various activities, services and information designed especially for seniors.
“Seniors throughout the territory enjoy their special month and most events are already booked out. After such a tumultuous year, seniors are excited to get out and about once more.”
