Territory Families has extended the use of travel vouchers issued to Northern Territory Seniors Recognition Scheme (NTSRS) members for 2019-20 for an additional six months.
This will provide NTSRS members who have not used their travel vouchers issued this financial year with a greater opportunity to claim their full benefit now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing.
Eligible NT residents aged 65 years or older who chose to use their $500 benefit for travel were issued vouchers. These vouchers can be used for travel within the NT including travel by vehicle or, when State and Territory borders open, to bring a family member to the Territory for a visit.
Territory Families Chief Executive Officer Ken Davies said the extension of the travel voucher expiry to 31 December 2020 would provide a boost to the Territory economy by supporting local businesses.
“It’s fantastic to be able to extend the expiry of the travel vouchers so that we can provide greater opportunity for our members to be able to access their benefit as coronavirus measures are lifted,’’ he said.
“Around 1700 NT Seniors Recognition Scheme members have unused travel vouchers and I encourage you to get out and about enjoy and all the Territory has to offer.
“Members can use their travel vouchers at one of 12 approved travel vendors, or they can choose to book their own travel and seek reimbursement.
“Members who are booking their own travel and claiming a reimbursement afterwards must do so by 31 December this year.”
More than 14,500 NTSRS members have been able to access a payment in 2019-20 under the scheme, which recognises the valuable contribution of senior Territorians.
Council on the Ageing Northern Territory (COTA NT) Chief Executive Officer Ms Sue Shearer said she was delighted the travel vouchers had been extended.
“Extending the expiry of the travel vouchers will benefit the local economy, particularly the tourism sector, which is especially important during this difficult time,” Ms Shearer said.
