NT coronavirus update

There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in the NT.

Two suspected cases are currently being assessed at Royal Darwin Hospital. When test results become available further information will be released.

Territorians should remain alert but not alarmed.

People are reminded to practice proper hygiene as a way of preventing the spread of infections. This includes regular hand washing and covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

If you have recently been to mainland China:

  • If you have travelled from Hubei Province within the past 14 days, you must self-isolate until 14 days have elapsed after leaving Hubei Province.
  • If you have has left, or transited through, mainland China on or after 1 February 2020 you must self-isolate yourself until 14 days after leaving China.
  • If you have has been in close contact with a confirmed case of novel coronavirus, you and your child must isolate yourself for 14 days after last contact with the confirmed case.
  • If you develop flu-like symptoms while you are self-isolated, contact the Top End Health Service Public Health Unit on 8922 8044.
  • If your symptoms worsen you should contact the Public Health Unit 8922 8044 or after hours the RDH switch 8922 8888, and ask for the public health officer on call.
  • If you become very unwell and are experiencing distress, contact 000 for an ambulance.
  • It is very important that you provide your travel history as a priority when seeking any medical advice or attention.

If you have not been to China:

  • Territorians are advised to remain alert, but not alarmed.
  • There is no need to be absent from work unless you have been to China and need to self-isolate.
  • There is no need to use masks, unless you have had contact with someone who has been confirmed as having the virus.
  • If you are experiencing fever, sweats or chills, or other flu-like symptoms please see your doctor.
  • Maintain usual hygienic practices in the work environment, which includes:
    • cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze
    • wash your hands or use hand sanitiser after you cough or sneeze
    • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
    • after coughing or sneezing
    • before preparing food or eating
    • after toilet use
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • avoid close contact with anyone with cold or influenza like symptoms
  • where possible do not share equipment, office supplies or desks
  • Do not attend work if you develop influenza like symptoms and see a general practitioner (GP) urgently. Call ahead to let them know, so they can take measures to protect themselves and other patients.
