Following on from Minister Wakefield’s announcement in Alice Springs yesterday, Territory Families will provide the following opportunity in Darwin.

What:            Launch of the Elders and Mentors Program at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre

When:          11am Thursday 12 December 2019   

Where:         Don Dale Youth Detention Centre

Spokesperson: Brent Warren, General Manager of Youth Justice and Darlene Devry, Indigenous mentor.

Background:

Aboriginal young people are over-represented in the youth justice system in the Northern Territory with about 98 per cent of young people in detention identified as Aboriginal.

The aim of the Elders and Mentors program is to provide guidance, increase cultural connection, respect and individual health and well-being, improve engagement with education and training, reduce negative behaviour and prevent re-offending.
