Domestic and Family Violence Information Sharing Laws Commence

Territory Families

Today marks the commencement of the new information sharing laws which will improve safety for victims experiencing domestic and family violence in the Northern Territory.

Territory Families Chief Executive Officer Mr Ken Davies said there is no place for domestic or family violence in our community.

“Violence in any form is not acceptable.

“Everyone, particularly children, deserve a safe and happy home life,” he said.

“The changes to information sharing laws around domestic and family violence will enable victims to be better supported and get the help they need sooner.

“This is a change will provide greater protection from the threat of violence.”

The Scheme allows Information Sharing Entities (for example relevant Government agencies and non-Government schools) to share relevant information, where it is necessary to protect people from serious threats of domestic and family violence.

The new laws aim to remove barriers between services so they can work together to:

    • improve safety for victims of DFV;

    • facilitate timely action from services, and referrals and collaboration between services;

    • prevent victims having to tell their stories over and over.
