Hector the Road Safety Cat is inviting Territorians big and small to the free Family Fun Day at the Parap Road Safety Centre, this Saturday 25 May.

Family are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets, and practice cycling safety on the centre’s mini-roads and intersections, providing Territory kids a safe environment to learn important road rules. The Centre’s bikes are also available on-site for use.

As well as practicing safe riding, kids can also enjoy a free sausage sizzle by Darwin Lions Club, face painting, a mini-jumping castle, as well as lots of other kid’s activities. Parents and caregivers can also receive practical advice from Kidsafe NT on child car restraints and fitments, as well as general road safety.

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Acting Director of Road Safety and Compliance, Jenny Malone, said the open day was a fun and exciting way for children to start learning about road safety.

“More people ride bikes per capita in the NT than any other jurisdiction in Australia, so it’s important we’re equipping our kids with ‘how’ to cycle responsibly and safely,” said Ms Malone.

“When riding a bike in the Territory, cyclists are required to abide by rules and regulations that apply to road users, and the Parap Road Safety Centre Open Day is a wonderful family-friendly event, providing Territory kids with an exciting and fun way to learn how to keep safe on and around our roads.”

The Parap Road Safety Centre Family Fun Day is hosted in partnership with Northern Territory Government, Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance and Kidsafe NT.

The Parap Road Safety Centre is located at 24 Holtze Street Parap, and the event will run from 9am to 1pm.
