Celebrating Multiculturalism at the Harmony Soiree in Darwin

Territory Families

The Northern Territory’s largest multicultural event will kick off this Saturday, with the start of the ninth annual Darwin Waterfront Harmony Soiree.

The Harmony Soiree is an event organised by the Office of Multicultural Affairs in collaboration with the Darwin Waterfront Corporation, Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory and Darwin Community Arts and is designed to celebrate the rich and diverse multicultural community throughout the Northern Territory.

Territory Families Chief Executive Officer Ken Davies said multiculturalism is an integral part of the Territory Lifestyle.

“The Harmony Soiree at the Darwin Waterfront gives those in the Top End a chance to see, experience and participate in activities which celebrate and showcase the myriad of cultures we have here in Darwin,” he said.

The event will have more than 20 community stalls with interactive activities and displays and feature 25 groups, consisting of more than 300 people participating in a range of performances throughout the event.

There will be performances, musicians, costumes, food, displays and representation from numerous cultures from all over the world including Vietnam, Nepal, Philippines, India, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Fiji, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, China, Kiribati, Nigeria and Papua New Guinea.

“One in five Territorians were born overseas and I believe this is an important opportunity to celebrate, share, acknowledge and respect our rich diversity which is part of what makes the Northern Territory such a special place,” Mr Davies said.

Through the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Territory Families is contributing more than $60,000 to the event.

The Harmony Soiree will be held at the Darwin Waterfront today, Saturday 25 May between 4pm and 8:30pm.

The events are free and everyone is invited.
