First Domestic, Sexual and Family Violence Conference to be held in Darwin

Territory Families

More than 150 frontline workers and specialists will come together today to participate in the Northern Territory’s first domestic, family and sexual violence conference.

The two-day Sharing and Strengthening our Practice Conference in Darwin provides an opportunity for practitioners from more than 40 government and non-government organisations to build service and workforce capability and responsiveness.

The conference is a key priority under Action Plan 1 of the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Reduction Framework 2018-2028. It has been designed around the themes of: assessing risk, listening to victim survivors, trauma-based and strengths-based practice; prevention and early intervention; sexual violence and building a supported, resourced and informed workforce.

Conference highlights will include key note presentations from interstate experts, panel discussions and breakout sessions.

Territory Families Chief Executive Ken Davies said it was fantastic to see frontline workers and specialists come together to deliver the first domestic, family and sexual violence conference.

“Evidence shows more than 60 incidents of domestic and family violence are reported every day in the Northern Territory and more Territorians are killed by domestic and family violence than in any other jurisdiction in Australia,’’ he said.

“Frontline workers are critical to combating domestic, family and sexual violence in our community and this is an important opportunity for them to share knowledge, learn from each other and develop innovative approaches together.

“Domestic, family and sexual violence is unacceptable. This conference is a great step towards achieving long-term social and cultural change but we all have a powerful role to play in changing individual attitudes and behaviours towards violence.’’
