Explorer of the Seas Cruise Ship Welcomed to Darwin

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

The Explorer of the Seas will arrive in Darwin this morning carrying more than 3,200 people from around the world.

The inaugural visit of the ship provides a welcome injection to the economy and a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best the Top End has to offer to an international audience.

Explorer of the Seas was launched in 2000 by Royal Caribbean International, one of the largest cruise lines in the world. The vessel has a gross tonnage of 138,000 with a capacity of 4,000 passengers and 1,180 crew and offers incredible features like an ice skating rink, FlowRider surf simulator and a rock climbing wall.

Passengers will be welcomed to Darwin today with live music and cultural performances, in Smith Street Mall and Raintree Park. Darwin Waterfront’s Cruise Ship markets will also be open from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday and 9am to 2pm on Monday.

With its tropical climate, Darwin receives larger ships in the main season from October-March and a number of small, luxury expedition cruise ships using Darwin as a home-base to explore the remote Northern Australian coastline from April-September.

This season the Top End will welcome 82 cruise and expeditionary ships, providing a huge tourism and economic boost.

According to Cruise Lines International Association Australasia’s Economic Impact Assessment 2017-18, the cruise sector brings an estimated $171.9 million a year to the local economy, which is good for business and good for jobs.

Quotes from Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture Chief Executive, Simonne Shepherd

“Today is a significant win for the tourism industry as we welcome one of the largest cruise ships to ever visit Darwin.

“It’s always exciting to see such stunning ships in Darwin Harbour. It’s a boost for the tourism industry and for local jobs.

“Cruise ship visits provide an influx of tourists into our region during the off-peak and shoulder seasons with passengers and crew undertaking tours, visiting local attractions and shopping at local retail outlets, cafes and restaurants.”

Quotes from Darwin Port Chief Executive Officer, Terry O’Connor

“Darwin Port welcomes the arrival of the Explorer of the Seas into the harbour. Royal Caribbean’s decision to continue to schedule visits to the port by these large vessels is a testament to the ability of the port to be able to cater to their needs.”

Quotes from Royal Caribbean Managing Director, Susan Bonner

“We are thrilled to bring Explorer of the Seas to Darwin for her maiden call to the Top End, on her final Australian cruise as she repositions to Southampton via Singapore.

“The Northern Territory is a highlight on any Aussie cruise itinerary and we know our 3,200 guests hailing from more than ten different nationalities will be making the most of their overnight stay. The laid-back vibe of Darwin and its proximity to some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders rates consistently highly in our guests’ feedback, and keeps us coming back for more.

“We can’t wait to return for four calls next season, including another overnight stay. We’ll see you later this year when Voyager of the Seas calls in November, fresh from a multi-million dollar revitalisation.”
