Cyclone Update: Repatriation to limited communities to commence tomorrow

Department of the Chief Minister

The Bureau of Meteorology has updated the cyclone warning zones to include from Port Roper in the Northern Territory to Burketown in Queensland and down south to just outside of Tennant Creek. The town of Tennant Creek is not in the warning zone. The region from Alyangula to Port Roper, including Groote Eylandt and Ngukurr is no longer in the warning zone.

Northern Territory Emergency Services are sending out survey teams to review areas affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor.

The systems has been downgraded to a Category 3 system as it continues to move inland, bringing rain and destructive winds to the region.

Regional Controller Commander Travis Wurst says despite the fact that some areas are no longer feeling the effects of Severe TC Trevor, “It doesn’t mean all communities have been given the all clear.”

Angurugu and Umbakumba residents have been cleared to start returning home from tomorrow morning. Evacuees are encouraged to stay in their registered shelters tonight so they can prepare to travel at first light. These residents will be eligible for relief payments from their community after arrival.  Bickerton Island residents are not yet cleared for return, this will be assessed tomorrow.

Numbulwar residents in Katherine will commence travel home by Bus from Monday. Evacuees are encouraged to stay at their registered shelter tonight. Please note that relief payments will be available after arrival in Numbulwar

Borroloola and Robinson River areas will start to be inspected by safety teams from tomorrow morning.

“We have people surveying those communities and the connecting roads that were affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor,” he said.

“One of the things that we’re concerned about is preserving vital infrastructure for these remote areas and restoring telecommunications, power and water to communities that have had their supplies affected.”

Severe TC Trevor is starting to decay as it travels inland towards Cape Crawford. It is forecast to track between Elliot and Creswell Downs and Brunette Downs into the early hours of the morning.

Residents around Tennant Creek should prepare their homes and businesses ahead of any possible rainfall and strong winds still being caused by Severe TC Trevor.
