NT Sport Integrity Network Established

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

A newly formed NT Sport Integrity Network involving the Territory’s peak sporting bodies, will meet quarterly to provide leadership on integrity issues affecting sports both on and off the playing arena.

With representatives from 39 Northern Territory peak sporting bodies, the group will form part of a Territory-wide forum. The members will share information and provide strategic cooperation arising from key sport integrity issues such as: illicit drugs, doping, match-fixing, illegal betting activity, member protection, inclusion, safeguarding children and criminal association.

The NT Sport Integrity Network will seek to collectively build intelligence of sport integrity threats, jointly address sport integrity issues and coordinate educational messages.

The Network will work in conjunction with the new National Sports Integrity Commission which will incorporate the National Integrity of Sport Unit, Play by the Rules and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.  The Network will also work closely with the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (Good Sports), Sports Medicine Australia, the Northern Territory Government Departments of Tourism, Sport and Culture, Health, Education and NT Police.

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture, Senior Director, Ian Ford, said “the Northern Territory Government is committed to honest and ethical behaviour in all sporting activities, both on and off the playing arena.”

“I’m pleased to see this important network come together for the first time, to foster and support the highest standards of conduct for sports in the Northern Territory.

“What we want to see is a much greater awareness and understanding through collaboration, targeted education and the mitigation of integrity issues threatening Territory sport.

“It’s vitally important that together, we inspire confidence in our sports people, and provide environments that are fair, inclusive, respectful, responsible and safe for all participants.”
