Don’t forget your pets this Christmas

Department of Primary Industry and Resources

Territorians are reminded they are responsible for the safety and welfare of their pets and livestock over the Christmas and holiday period.

Department of Primary Industry and Resources (DPIR) Executive Director Biosecurity and Animal Welfare Sarah Corcoran said pet and animal ownership is a serious responsibility that extends for the animal’s entire life.

“All Territorians have a responsibility for the welfare, health and safety of their pets and livestock,” Ms Corcoran said.

“If you’re travelling over the holiday period, make sure you have made arrangements for someone to look after your animals or have booked them into an appropriate boarding or agistment facility.

“If you are giving or receiving a pet as a Christmas present, bear in mind that pet ownership is a long-term responsibility. Dogs can live for up to 15 years and cats up to 20 years.”

DPIR’s Animal Welfare Branch is responsible for enforcing the Northern Territory’s Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, and investigate reports of animal neglect, cruelty and abuse.

The Animal Welfare Branch will have inspectors working right through the Christmas and New Year period,” Ms Corcoran said.

“If you are worried about a pet not being looked after properly, or witness an animal or pet being treated cruelly, you can report it to Animal Welfare on 1300 720 386

“All calls received by Animal Welfare are strictly confidential and you can remain anonymous.

“If you are reporting animal abuse or cruelty, please provide as much information as possible

about the animal or animals involved and the circumstances as this will help our inspectors to investigate your complaint.”
