Consultation open - draft Burial and Cremation Bill

Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development

The proposed legislation will replace the current Cemeteries Act, and better reflects the needs and wishes of the NT community regarding burials, cremation and the handling of loved ones’ remains.

The new legislation will ensure that:

  • human remains continue to be treated with dignity and respect

  • burial and cremation records, such as registers, are kept and maintained

  • different practices and beliefs regarding the burial or cremation of human remains are accommodated

  • cemeteries on Aboriginal land are recognised.
