Territory Families has released the Employment Guide for Migrants – Information for Migrants Looking for Work in the Northern Territory.
The guide includes information on employment services in the NT, advice on how to be ‘job ready’, how to apply for a job, understanding the Australian workplace culture, conditions and rights, taxation, superannuation and discrimination.
Territory Families CEO Ken Davies said the guide has been updated to include important information to advise migrants about employment and how to get a job in the Northern Territory.
“The Northern Territory is fortunate to have a rich and diverse population and migrants have long contributed to the fabric of life here. It’s important that we educate and support people to find work so they can connect with their community,’’ Mr Davies said.
“Gaining secure employment is a key settlement outcome for new arrivals to the Northern Territory. Migrants pursue employment as a means of acquiring economic security for their families and welcome the opportunity to contribute to their new home.
“We know that having a job is crucial to the successful settlement of migrants and their families and we want to make their transition to the Territory as seamless as possible.”
Multiculturalism is a significant part of life in the Territory which is highlighted by more than 1,700 migrants settling in the Territory between June 2016 and June 2017. Out of a population of approximately 250,000, one in five Territorians (20 per cent) were born overseas.
The
top five countries of birth outside of Australia are Philippines, England, New
Zealand, India and Greece.
