Plant sale perfect for the beginner gardener

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

It’s that time of year again when Territorians can snap up a leafy bargain at the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens annual plant sale.

Run by the Friends of the Darwin Botanic Gardens, this event is eagerly awaited by Darwin gardeners, many of whom queue at the gates well before the 8:00am start time.

George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens Events and Projects Coordinator, Nigel Walsh, said the event draws a crowd, with locals attending to stock up on fancy flora ahead of the Wet Season.

“It’s fantastic to see that the annual plant sale has become such a highlight on the Gardens’ calendar,” Mr Walsh said.

“Gardening is known for being great for the mind, body and spirit, and we encourage Territorians to make the most out of this fantastic day.

“One of the most encouraging things to see is an increasing number of younger plant enthusiasts.

“It’s important that future generations continue to preserve our natural flora. Events like this present a great opportunity for youth to learn about conservation methods while gaining some great gardening tips.”

Refreshments will be available as well as sprinklers for the kids to cools off under.

Peter Knibbs from Friends of the Darwin Botanic Gardens said all plants are propagated in the Friends’ nursery area from material donated by members and from the Gardens itself.

“The plant sale is always a fantastic time to replenish your gardens and after the impact of Cyclone Marcus, we anticipate a high number of Territorians,” Mr Knibbs said.

“The plants are all locally grown and suited to the Top End climate, and with many plants ranging between five and ten dollars it is the perfect opportunity for anyone just starting out.”

Bring the family, tell your friends and don’t forget to pack your wheelbarrows! It’s sure to be a fantastic day for all.

The plant sale will take place tomorrow, November 4, 8:00am until 12:00pm.

Use the Gardens' Geranium Street entrance and parking to get to the nursery. For more information, please contact the Friends of the Darwin Botanic Gardens on 0478 418 587.
