Hughes Avenue has been reopened today for cyclists in both directions following completion of works to improve conditions and ensure safety.
Downhill access was restricted to cyclists on 9 October, following notification of a serious single person bicycle incident, similar to another separate incident at the same location.
Since the closure, the Darwin Waterfront Corporation engineers and contractors have modified the speed bump profiles to ensure safety for all users.
The Darwin Waterfront’s public liability insurer has reviewed and endorsed the modifications.
These works are a short term response to allow the road to be open to cyclists in both directions. Cyclists are encouraged to continue to exercise caution when travelling downhill.
Future upgrades to improve access and safety for all users in this area continue to be developed as part of the Darwin Luxury Hotel, including dedicated cycle lanes along Hughes Avenue.
The Corporation apologises for any inconvenience during the recent closure and thanks the public for its patience.
