The Northern Territory Aboriginal Interpreter Service has been hailed as a crucial service to the court systems in the APY Lands, by senior members of the South Australian justice system.
His Honour the Chief Justice of South Australia Chris Kourakis said he was moved by the work of the interpreters.
“The Aboriginal Interpreter Service is critical to our court system,” he said.
“I am impressed by the commitment by the AIS and the long hours of dedication and travel that is required to make the system function.”
Chief Justice Kourakis was accompanied by presiding Magistrate Rodney Oates on the APY Lands Magistrates Bush Court Circuit earlier this month.
“The Aboriginal Interpreter Service is the most important part of the court,” Magistrate Oates said.
“Without an interpreter, the court finds it very difficult to operate. The Aboriginal Interpreter Service is essential to the courts functions,” he said.
