The Alice Springs Desert Park is shining the spotlight on our desert animals and plants with an exciting three-day program to mark National Threatened Species Day.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Alice Springs Desert Park Director, Paul AhChee Ngala said National Threatened Species Day is commemorated across the country on 7 September to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction.

“This year Alice Springs Desert Park is celebrating our desert animals and plants with a three day program hosting ‘Time to Take Action’ from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 September,” Mr AhChee said.

“Join the Discovery Trail and explore a self-guided walk to learn about our endangered animals and plants and discover their stories of survival. 

“Make Sunday 9 September a family day and pack a picnic.  Spring is here and the wildflowers are in full bloom.  Enjoy free face painting from 11am to 1pm and take part in animal and plant crafts.

“You’ll also be able to enjoy the brand new playground under the shade of sails opposite the Coolamon Cafe.

“The colourful new playground was designed by Paul Campbell Architects, and local artist Jnine was commissioned to create the bilby and Natureworks supplied the thorny devil and carpet python.

“Existing artworks by Kaye Kessing currently used by the Desert Park have been incorporated into the design.”
