Stress Less in Peko Park

Department of Health

For the first time a Stress Less community wellness event is coming to Tennant Creek with Stress Less in Peko Park open to everyone in the Barkly region this September.

Stress Less community events have been held with great success in Alice Springs since 2014.

Stress Less in Peko Park strives to challenge perceptions and remove stigma around mental illness to make way for more people to seek the help and get the support they deserve. Local organisations, agencies and the community at large will come together to unite in creating a mentally healthy Tennant Creek community. On this day, you can expect to be entertained by a local band and dancers, have a sausage sizzle and wash it down with a bottle of water, see the high school students participate in Paint Splash, and gather information and merchandise from the local organisations to assist you and your family or friends in the journey to mental wellness.

The focus of the Stress Less in Peko Park is on early intervention, information sharing and providing carers with support. People who attend will get to know the local organisations in Tennant Creek that support mental wellbeing.

At Stress Less in Peko Park we encourage those who are caring for a person who is dealing with mental unwellness and mental health issues to attend. Carers are vital in supporting a family member or friend with a mental illness as they move through their journey. These carers will be able to collect a care package and information at the Carers Stall. Mental Health Central Australia Health Service has a dedicated Carer Consultant employed to provide information to carers.

Two hundred students from Tennant Creek High School will attend and will have the opportunity to understand how they can ask for help for themselves or a mate.  A quiz will be offered with a chance to win some great prizes.

Stress Less in Peko Park will be held on Thursday 6 September 2018 commencing at 10am and finishing at 1pm.

Stress less in the Park is delivered by the Department of Health in partnership with health organisations, agencies, and the broader community who are supporting this event, including ADSCA, Barkly Arts, BRAADAG, Barkly Mental Health (CAHS), Carers NT, CAWLS, Dementia Australia, Life without Barriers, NAAJA,  MIFANT, Salvation Army, Tennant CreekHealth (Acute Care Unit and Public Health Unit, ) Women’s Refuge, TC Dance Crew, Saltbush, Memo Club, Barkly Regional Council, Bellette Media, Tennant Creek Memorial Club, Lions Club of Tennant Creek and PHN Northern Territory.

This activity is supported by funding from the Australian Government through the PHN Program.
