Works start on Ross Smith Memorial

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Important restoration works have started on the Ross Smith Memorial, located in the parklands on the corner of East Point Road and Ross Smith Avenue in Fannie Bay.

Local contracting firm Landshapes was awarded the tender, and will carry out works to regrade surrounding landscapes, as well as install a new platform podium with in-ground up-lights, root control barriers to the perimeter, an interpretive timeline pathway, and a low retaining wall with built in seating for visitors to enjoy.

Currently, Stage One works are underway and include temporary fencing erected around the podium restricting access while a pillar box is being installed. Stage Two works will involve a slight detour for pedestrians while the new footpath connects with the current foot and bike path. Works are expected to be completed by the end of the August 2018.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Director of Heritage Branch, Michael Wells, said the restoration works were important to continue the commemoration of Australia’s first ever aviation monument.

“The Ross Smith Memorial forms a significant part of the Territory’s history, and was originally unveiled on 20 May 1923 to commemorate a record-breaking flight by aviators Captain Ross Smith and Lieutenant Keith Smith, following their successful completion of the first ever flight from England to Australia in under 30 days in 1919,” said Mr Wells.

“While works are underway, we encourage those who use this magnificent public space looking over Fannie Bay to be aware of the works as they’re carried out.”

Judy Boland from the Fannie Bay History and Heritage Society said she was excited to see works start on the Ross Smith Memorial.

“Congratulations to the Government on their care and conservation of this very important memorial, that is important not only to the Territory, but to the whole of Australia,” said Ms Boland.
