Incident at Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre

There was an incident involving three young people at the Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre overnight, 29 June 2018, at approximately 10.45pm. Police assisted Territory Families at the Centre and with transportation.

Damage to infrastructure at the Centre saw 14 young people temporarily transported voluntarily to the Police watch house, accompanied by a Senior Youth Justice staff member, which enabled a safety and security check at the Centre to occur post incident.

These young people have now been returned to the Centre.

No young people were injured during the disturbance however two Youth Justice Officers sustained injuries during the incident. The safety and wellbeing of young people and staff in youth detention centres is paramount.

The incident has now been referred to Police.
