Around 500 school students will gather at Casuarina Senior College today to take part in the Northern Territory RoboCup Junior competition – a project-orientated robotics educational competition for primary and secondary school students. 

The NT titles, which is now in its third year, will see 98 teams from over 20 schools competing across three major categories – dance, rescue and soccer. 

RoboCup NT Chair, and Department of Education IT Service Officer, Monica Hilse said the highly anticipated event was becoming more popular each year. 

“RoboCup Junior fosters the learning of technical skills including programming, engineering and technical reporting through competitive challenges,” Ms Hilse said. 

“Students have been working collaboratively over the past couple of months to design, build and program their robots to perform functions and compete in one of the three categories. 

“This fantastic development allows students to be as creative and pioneering as they wish, experiment with different robotic designs, and be inventive in the use of sensors and robot interactions. 

“The competition encourages students to embrace and develop 21st century innovation and technical skills required to thrive and prepare for future careers in STEM. 

“We look forward to seeing the product created by each of the teams as they showcase their coding, programming and robotics skills at today’s event.” 

RoboCup Junior NT will be held at Casuarina Senior College Gym from 8.30am – 2.30pm, with the finals round starting at 12pm.  

The winning NT teams will compete at the 2018 Australian Open National Competition in Melbourne in October.
