Merly Fe Masterson is excited to be in her new Rosebery home, which has been constructed as part of the Urban Public Housing Strategy.
“It’s very nice, everything is good,” she said.
The Urban Public Housing Strategy aims to better align the Northern Territory’s public housing stock to the changing needs of tenants.
This includes people with special needs, who make up 13 per cent of urban applications on the waiting list.
Four one-bedroom and four two-bedroom units were constructed in Rosebery, purpose-built for public housing tenants with special needs.
It’s resulted in more appropriate accommodation for current public housing tenants, and housing for some who have been on the waiting list.
“I am very lucky,” Ms Masterson said.
The annual construction target for the Urban Renewal Strategy is already being exceeded, with construction starting and identified for 31 new public housing properties, against a target of 20.
A further 34 dwellings a planned for renewal in 2018-19.
