The Department of Tourism and Culture’s Araluen Arts Centre is pleased to welcome Mikelangelo, of the Black Sea Gentleman fame, back to Alice Springs to celebrate three of the great poets of popular music.
“We are excited to present Mikelangelo’s tribute to the music of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen in a one-man tour-de-force performance,” Senior Director of the Department of Tourism and Culture’s Araluen Cultural Precinct, Dr Mark Crees said.
“Alice Springs audiences will remember the smooth and rich voice of Mikelangelo from his past performances with the Black Sea Gentleman, as well as his appearances on RocKwiz.”
The music of Cave, Waits and Cohen stole Mikelangelo’s heart and soul as a young man, so it is fitting that he delivers a stirring homage to these men who set him on his musical path in a show filled with beauty, vitality and humour.
With masterful control, Mikelangelo brings together a brilliant collection of songs, stripping them back to reveal immense power and vulnerability, weaving songs together with his own personal stories and reflections in this transporting and entertaining show. Mikelangelo’s voice is smooth and rich as velvet, making each song his own. His guitar playing summons great breadth and emotion and his accordion and piano playing add a delightful and melodic change of mood.
“The audience will be stunned by Mikelangelo’s interpretations of songs such as Cave’s Into My Arms, Cohen’s Hallelujah and Wait’s Goin’ Out West, as well as his original songs inspired by these legends of popular songwriting,” Dr Crees said.
Mikelangelo has played to pack houses from the Sydney Opera House and London’s West End as a solo artist and the front man of the Black Sea Gentleman, impressing audiences with his original songs and impressive showmanship.
Mikelangelo sings Cave Waits Cohen has toured across Australia and to last year’s Edinburgh Festival to great acclaim, and will be live onstage at the Araluen Arts Centre on Saturday 30 June at 8:00pm.
